Game Overview

Midnight Gambit is a high-stakes strategy game created in 48 hours for the SA Game Jam 2024 under the theme *Midnight Staircase*. You wager souls to climb higher, but the further you go, the riskier it becomes. Pick doors, roll dice, and push your luck, only one door leads upward, and failure could drag you back down. Every third level offers a riddle machine where a correct answer can earn you more souls or remove a false door. With its mocking narrator and randomised progression, every climb is a gamble.

Development Details

I was the developer on Midnight Gambit, responsible for building the gameplay loop and all core systems in Unreal Engine. I implemented the dice-rolling mechanics, soul betting, and the randomisation of doors each round. I also built the riddle machines, integrated triggered narrator voice lines, and designed the progression system to balance risk and reward. As my second Unreal project, this game was both a learning opportunity and a rapid prototyping challenge, teaching me to focus on core mechanics and delivering a complete loop within the 48-hour game jam timeframe.
